QuoVadis Live! Is Growing

You might remember we mentioned some while ago (see this post) our server was so busy at times he simply couldn't cope with more connections. As traffic increased at an unexpected rate the "Sorry! Kinda difficult to keep up right now. Please try again in a few minutes." cartoon message was starting to show too often which was becoming kinda embarrassing... We immediately figured we'd better do something about it or we could kiss our project good-bye. So last week we've moved to a new server upgrading all the code to take maximum advantage of the new architecture. In the process our development team has increased too with addtional members (thing we really needed to do as well). We've been re-enabling features bit-by-bit and are going to release new ones in September. We haven't completely finished yet. But the new QuoVadis Live! is already looking really good. Stay tuned!

First crewed flight for VSS Enterprise

According to a tweet from Richard Branson and to Virgin News released today, VSS Enterprise realized it's first crewed flight on July the 15th 2010. And what does it have to do with quovadislive.com? One year ago NASA and the rest of the world celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the first moonwalk. For the occasion we released a small control showing on every map whereby the earth latitude and longitude coordinates where projected on the moon. That was our way to pay a tribute to the 400,000 people involved in the Apollo Mission. The Spaceship Projects represent to us the same than the Apollo Program or Yeager breaking the sound barrier in a level flight on October 14th 1947 or Columbus (re-) discovering America in 1492. In our opinion all these projects are among the few that embody the true spirit of Entrepreneurship. It makes the human being greater by pushing the limits a little bit further every time. And at QuoVadis Live! it encourages us to push the outside of the enveloppe every day a little bit more. Kudos to the guys at Spaceship and in particular Spaceshipone. Local Search on quovadislive.com

We've just released a tool to search places nearby an event. Of course, the local search feature is not new. But it's still handy to have! Therefore whenever you land on a geoevent page on quovadislive.com you can easily have nearby hotels, restaurants, shops, etc. showing on the map around the location the event is taking place.

Google Earth on QuoVadis Live!

Good news for all the Google Earth aficionados out there. We've just integrated Google Earth into QuoVadis Live! When clicking the "View" button on the top-right of a map, you can switch between Map View to Satellite View to Bird's Eye to Street View and from now on also to Google Earth View. Meaning you can now view geoevents locations, friends geolocations, places and geotours in 3-D, zoom out to space and zoom in back to earth, look around the buildings, etc.

Privacy Rules on QuoVadis Live!

Privacy is a big thing for us at QuoVadis Live! Thus everytime you map a geeovent you can decide who to share it with: everybody, only a few or "for your eyes only". The same applies to geotours, groups you setup or when you map your geolocation. But rather than a lot of bla... bla... bla... and to make a long story short our in-house cartoonist has once again gone straight to the point. Enjoy!

Kinda re-edit however worth reminding. As stated in this post a while ago, QuoVadis Live! members can create their own groups so other members with same interests can share geoevents, geotours and even discuss. Thus you can create a group of fans for your favourite band to share gigs and exchange experiences or, if you're in a club, a group to post club events or a group for your organisation, your industry, etc. Basically you can create a virtual space where people with common interests can not only network online but also organise and manage networking events.

When that happens the server will let you know displaying the image below on your screen. QuoVadis Live! becomes more social

It's been a while since our last post. We haven't been idling. If you pay attention to the site you can see that user pages have changed. Thus members have now the option to personalize their profile page even better by picking-up a pre-designed theme and customize it with a background picture of their own. Mapped geoevents, geotours and contacts geolocations can be immediately spotted on a single map with basic data on the left side of the map including distances from the user's geolocation to the geoevents he has mapped or those he is interested in attending. And because a user might map those geoevents of special interest to others - such as concerts, gigs, exhibitions, meetings, etc. - we thought it would be nice to let QuoVadis Live! Members follow each other. Thus a user can not only have contacts but observers as well. And whenever a contact is also an observer, that contact becomes a friend with whom you can decide to share non-degraded geolocation information. See for yourself at http://www.quovadislive.com/.

With QuoVadis Live! quovadislive.com you can be notified whenever a friend of yours is nearby or a geoevent that might be of interest to you happens in a specific area. The notifications are sent as emails to your mailbox and direct messages to your Twitter account if it's connected to your QuoVadis Live! one. That means you can already receive updates as text messages if you're not using an international number (must be a US number only). Well happens that a couple of weeks ago O2 UK teamed up with Twitter so O2 UK customers that have a Twitter account can receive updates as text messages free of charge. Therefore if you happen to be a US resident or an O2 UK customer with an account in QuoVadis Live! connected to a Twitter account, you can receive quovadislive.com notifications via free text messages.

Content Adaptation by mobile network operators - resolved!

We told you we'd keep you posted on that one so there it is! If you have a look at our post of last July the 10th (Content Adaptation by mobile network operators), you might remember that all of a sudden quovadislive.com pages were automatically being reformatted on mobiles connected to specific mobile operators. That is called "Content Adaption". Although content adaptation is not a bad idea, it simply didn't work for our web services. Therefore we immediately contacted Vodafone UK to see if we could have our website whitelisted so their "Content Adaptation" software doesn't reformat our pages. The guys over there have been very supportive and worked on the matter immediately. We've also sent an email whitelist request to Vodafone Ireland the same day which seemed to have gone un-actioned as our webpages were still being reformatted 20 days after in Ireland. So we've contacted Vodafone UK again to see if they could help and we are now pleased to announce that our webpages are not being reformatted when connecting through Vodafone Ireland neither. From QuoVadis Live! we'd like to thank Brian, Ryan and all the rest of the team at Vodafone for their support. Thanks guys!

Seemed kinda obvious isn't it? Until today users could add new venues only when mapping geoevents or geotours. From now on, users can also map tourist point of interests (POIs), that is places worth visiting (and not strictly commercial), and sport and leisure centres. The "Map event!" button in the top bar has also been replaced with a simple "Map it!" button. Clicking the "Map it!" button launches our user-friendly Geo Wizard which will guide all the way to map your geoevent, POI or activity successfully. Know an unmissable geoevent, a POI worth visiting or a nice sport & leisure centre? Feel free to map it at quovadislive.com.

QuoVadis Live! celebrates Apollo 40th Anniversary

In a few days, it will be 40 years since the first moonwalk... Wow! 40 years already! Apollo Missions represent an amazing testimony of the great things mankind is capable of achieving. 40 years ago 400,000 people working together simply won the biggest challenge to date: to land a man on the moon. What many of us are dreaming of, only a few 12 have achieved. The Apollo Program is trully inspirational to us in that sense it makes us always push the outside of the envelope.

WE at QuoVadis Live! quovadislive.com would like to pay a tribute to all those men and women involved in the Apollo Missons and especially to those lucky enough to walk on the moon. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first man on the moon, we've implemented a little control at the bottom right of each quovadislive.com map that will rocket you directly to where these heroes went.

Again happy 40th anniversary to the 400,000 people involved in the Apollo Program. Kudos to them all.

If you've got an account on Twitter and if you are following QuoVadis Live!, you can now send your event to QuoVadis Live! as a direct message which has to have the following format:

Name is the name of the event;

Date is the date of the event in dd/mm/yy format;

Time is the time of the event in hh:mm format;

Location is the location of the event in venue,city,country ISO code format;

Admission can be F for Free or T for Ticket or R for Registration or I for Invitation;

Category can be A for Art&Culture or B for Business or C for Comedy or D for Demonstration or F for Family or M for Music or S for Sport or T forTechnology;

If you've got a Twitter account, you can now login from Twitter to QuoVadis Live! even if you don't have an account on QuoVadis Live! yet. All you have to do is to click on the "Login from Twitter" button in quovadislive.com homepage.

Then you're taken to Twitter for authentication purposes where you'll be given the possibility to let QuoVadis Live! connect to your Twitter account which is needed to update your status on Twitter whenever you map a geoevent on QuoVadis Live! or you report your geolocation (except when in hidden mode). And because we've implemented OAuth standards you certainly don't need to enter your Twitter name and password in QuoVadis Live!.

Content Adaptation by mobile network operators

We were conducting mobile tests as usual when we had the unpleasant surprise to see our pages being rendered in a way that doesn't match the way we've developed them. Apparently the problem is not new since other mobile content developers have experienced similar symptoms and it seems one mobile operator we're using for testing has a service supposed to "adapt the content" of a website for mobile phones. "Content adaptation" is a very loable thing. However, like for many other websites, it doesn't work for us. On the contrary. It's making our web services completely messed up. The fact is we already have a way to adapt the web services we're developing so you can have an enjoyable experience whether you're using a PC or a mobile device to access quovadislive.com. Anyhow who know how the content has to be displayed the best than the guys who are developing the service? Now apparently there's a whitelist so the "content adaptation service" doesn't render sites in that list and passes the "user-agent" info which is critical in order to detect whether you're using a computer or a mobile phone and therefore format the content accordingly. We've just sent a request to be added to that whitelist and see what gives. We'll keep you posted.

If you've checked QuoVadis Live!'s Support Page or if you're following us on Twitter, then you already know that QuoVadis Live! works with Twitter. For if you wanted to know "but never dared to ask", here's exactly what you can get with your free quovadislive.com account:

Have your followers automatically informed about your geoevents, how to get there, weather forecast, who plans to go as soon as you map them...
...and also the country, the city, the street (you decide!) you currently are in.

Be immediately notified via a direct message (not public) as soon as a friend of yours is in a particular area or an event of a particular type happens in one of your places.

"What do I need to do?" you may ask. Well, you just have to click a "Connect with Twitter" button in your QuoVadis Live! account settings page for Twitter.

"Do I have to give away my Twitter account password for this?" No way! We're following OAuth standards.

Street View now available in QuoVadis Live!

It was about time! One of our users asked us this week if it was possible to have Google Maps' Street View in QuoVadis Live! quovadislive.com. This is actually a feature we had in mind since Google released Street View for its map API but never been a top priority feature to implement as we had other work to do first. However the specific query of that user was also a call to action and using the time between two tasks we decided to finally implement it. From a "feature wish" it became a requirement. Therefore we're happy to announce Street View is now available in QuoVadis Live! along with the map view, the satellite view and the bird's eye view. And by the way, if you too have a special feature you'd like to see in quovadislive.com let us know!

What a great idea! Do you have a business plan?

According to business e-zines there seem to be companies who can get funding without even having a business plan. OK as I write that I'm specially thinking of one company in particular: Twitter which has raised at least $55 million from Benchmark Capital, Spark Capital, Institutional Venture Partners and Bezos Expeditions without having implemented a proper revenue model yet in despite of having ideas on how to generate money. So how do they do it?

Behind a company you have people and that's where one has to look first. Fact is Evan Williams, Twitter CEO, also co-founded Blogger in 1999, which Google bought in 2003. Means you have one guy there who's got experience in not only developing a business successfully but whose business has done very well with a quick and very profitable exit. That builds attraction, credibility and trust: the guy is actually capable of delivering and has proved it.

Twitter is not generating money at this stage. Actually the startup plans to use its new funds precisely to develop revenue models. Furthermore Twitter has already started in developing key business partnerships. Which means... Tada!... They've got a strategy.

As Twitter's CEO put it on December 2008: "We will make money, and I can't say exactly how because...we can't predict how the businesses we're in will work." Indeed how can one forecast what needs to be done one year from now? What credibility can you give to a document that pretends to cover at least a three years period? Specially considering that there's not such thing as a static market. Customers and competition are actually the two basic elements of any market. And they're active. Very much so. According to the Basic Rule Of All Competition "you are not smarter than either the customer or the competition". And that's why you cannot have a "roadmap to the future". In relation to competition threats Evan Williams adds: "I'm pretty sure they are (planning to), but we can't worry about that. Focus is a really big deal. Even Google stumbles on the focus issue. It's not as important as search and advertising. Innovator's dilemma works against bigger companies." Again: strategy.

So there you go. Now the question is if this works for Twitter would that work for other startups? Or do Twitter have a business plan which they haven't officially released... At QuoVadis Live! quovadislive.com we don't have a business plan but we have a pretty clear strategy to support a great idea!

Geolocation and Situational Awareness

Basically Situational Awareness is when you know exactly what's going on and where. Well with QuoVadis Live! Geotracks you'll now be able to develop your Situational Awareness by being automatically notified everytime one of your contacts is around or in one of your areas and also when geoevents of types that are of interest to you are happening in any of those areas. And best of all is that you don't need an expensive mobile phone to use the service!

By the way, we've also updated the homepage so it reflects better what you can do with QuoVadis Live! And for if you need any help, we've also completely rewritten the support page. Where are you going then?

QuoVadis Live! Goes Mobile

Of course QuoVadis Live! could already be seen in internet enabled mobile devices. However the format was left to be desired and what about the maps? That was a concern from the beginning as we want to make QuoVadis Live! accessible to everyone and from any internet enabled devices including mobile phones with basic browsing capability. With an already heavy workload we simply couldn't find time to sort it out. However, we've finally managed to dedicate some time to the matter and are happy to announce you can now browse geoevents on QuoVadis Live! and get the details of your favourite geoevents from your internet enabled mobile phone. And that includes geoevents maps!

Maps and Legends

We've finally released a tool which allows users to create legends for the geotours they map. Basically you can now group your geotour's waypoints in types and customize its map icon so waypoints of different types are immediately distinguishable on the map. You can also easily control the map icons display from the "Display" map button in order to select those geotour's waypoints of types you wanna see. Geotours waypoints display have also been enhanced using clustering. So whenever you zoom out up a certain level, the geotour's map icons blend together into a single one per country. By the way, geotours map are now also embeddable via Smart Link or simple embed. That's all for now. Hope you'll enjoy it!

A Very Busy Month at QuoVadis Live!

We've just released an exciting new way to link to a geoevent in QuoVadis Live! mixing hyperlink and map. Starting today every geoevent map page has an extra data field called Smart Link. What it allows you to do is not only to link to your favourite geoevents but also to have the geoevent map embedded with that link. It works this way:

1 - Copy the line of code contained in the Smart Link field in your clipboard.

2 - Paste in your webpage.

3 - That's it!

Anytime time a visitor puts the mouse over the link, the geoevent map it's linking to will appear in your page. You can also move the embedded map like any other window.

Get there flying!

Well, we've just released a new feature. Users can now look for cheap flights to a geoevent location from its QuoVadis Live! page. All you have to do is to click on the Get There link in the geoevent's page and fly away! And if you don't know if there's an airport around, you just have to click on the Display button on the map, check the airports option and zoom out to let nearby airports appear on the map (beta). You can also look for available flights from there too by clicking on an airport icon!

At QuoVadis Live! we're true believers the Internet should be free and that's why our geoevent and geotour mapping web services are free (within TOS). However behind this free web service, like in other websites, there's a lot of work involved, including R&D, and the web hosting service is not free. There's a cost. That's why we had to find a way to start generating some form of revenue in order to at least cover the running costs of our web service without compromising the quality of the service. It seemed to us the natural path to achieve this goal was simply to start publishing ads relevant to the nature of the website and offering products and services which can be of interest to visitors who want to assit to a particular geoevent or complete a specific geotour.

New Geotour Category

We've just released a new category for the geotours called Filming Locations allowing users to map movies locations attaching related films extracts that might be on YouTube. Therefore you can now pinpoint famous movies sets directly on QuoVadis Live! maps, eventually watch part of a movie where the location can be seen, download movies sets locations into your GPS and organise themed travels to experience favourite movies moments! One of our users has already mapped sets of John Borman's 1981 movie blockbuster Excalibur making it the first geotour of the Filming Locations category.

Whenever you map a geoevent in QuoVadis Live! you can attach a YouTube movie to it. Thus clicking on the movie button in the geoevents page displays the movie related to a geoevent instead of the map.

That's right! Google Maps API provides a set of development tools quite useful to embed a "blank" Google Map in a website and to manipulate it. Thanks to this API we can allow QuoVadis Live! members to plot the exact venue of the geoevents they're logging, they're actually mapping them, so users looking for a geoevent can immediately see where it is.

What's the big idea?

It's quite simple really. People are looking for events and want to see where it takes place, when and how to get there. And people going someplace want to know what's going on there and around. Now the thing is QuoVadis Live! is based on contributions made by members (registered users). That is a registered user knows about an event and decides to share it mapping it in QuoVadis Live! so other users can find it. A registered user can also rate an event and leave a comment about it. By the way, registration is free and mapping a geoevent is also free.
